SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — The San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology (SAMSAT) recently hosted its annual outdoor rocket launch at the Port — an event that marked the end of the museum's week-long Aerospace Engineers STEM summer camp program.
Nearly two dozen area middle and high school students participated in the camp. Over the course of several days, they were introduced to the principles of aviation and propulsion, concluding with designing and building several model rockets and launching them in close coordination with the United States Air Force.
IMPORTANT SAFETY PROTOCOLS
Port San Antonio is adjacent to a major military/industrial airfield, Kelly Field, which is owned and controlled by the U.S. Air Force. The rocket launch took place in direct coordination between SAMSAT and the Air Force.
People should NOT conduct similar flight activities (i.e., balloons, drones, kites, model rockets/airplanes, etc.) on the Port campus or elsewhere close to the airfield without prior authorization from proper authorities.
As friends and families gathered in the heart of the Tech Port campus to cheer them on, it served as a great conclusion to a memorable summer experience and an important milestone as the young women and men — who worked closely with industry professionals such as the Alamo Rocketeers — ponder a future as our next generation of innovators.
While enrolled in the camp, the students learned about the various educational and career paths that exist in aerospace — including opportunities on the Port campus that are driving the industry forward — through an array immersive hands-on learning activities in areas such as airplanes and space exploration.
The Aerospace Engineers experience is a part of the array of STEM summer camps offered by SAMSAT. Other summer camps include a focus on cybersecurity, robotics, esports, coding and much more. Scholarships for SAMSAT summer camps are available for qualifying students, with twelve of the Aerospace Engineers summer camp students earning scholarships.
