Port Awards Nearly $7 Million in Procurements to Area’s Small and Minority Business in FY2016

Efforts hailed as exemplary by San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

10-04-2016

During Fiscal Year 2016, which ended Sept. 30, Port San Antonio awarded $6.8 million in contracts to small businesses and those that are minority-, woman-, and/or veteran-owned (SMWVBE’s). The number represents additional growth from the previous record year, when similar procurements totaled $6.2 million in FY2015. Approximately 77 percent of suppliers and service providers the Port contracted in FY2016 are based in Bexar County.

This track record was lauded by the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which named the Port among top public entities in small and minority business contracting during this week’s Max Navarro Leaders in Procurement Excellence award ceremony.

The Port team is recognized by the Hispanic Chamber for exemplary efforts contracting with small and minority-owned businesses in FY2016.

“Small businesses throughout the San Antonio region are our essential partners,” said Port President and CEO Roland Mower. “Our customers keep growing and adding jobs, and it is important that we can count on suppliers and contractors who share our commitment to excellent service. We depend on their expertise and professionalism to support our day-to-day operations and big plans for the future.”

"The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is proud to honor Port San Antonio for their procurement efforts with small, minority- and women-owned businesses. It''s through local purchasing efforts like these that the San Antonio small business community is able to continue to thrive," said Ramiro A. Cavazos, President  & CEO of San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

The vendors provided an array of important services to the Port, whose 1,900-acre site is home to large aerospace, manufacturing, cyber security, logistics and Department of Defense employers. The Port’s tenant customers operate within 10 million square feet of commercial and industrial facilities and employ approximately 12,000 people.

Key projects undertaken by small local vendors during the course of the year included the demolition of half a million square feet of obsolete buildings and structures — paving the way for future development of new aerospace and advanced manufacturing facilities at the Port’s industrial airport. The demolition and strategic preparation of nearly 180 acres will accommodate future careers as the Port aims to create 5,000 new jobs on its campus by 2020.

Additionally, new customer Indo-MIM — a global leader in precision component parts who established its first U.S. manufacturing operation at the Port in FY2016 — underwent a major finish-out project to its nearly 100,000-square-foot facility, including roof, HVAC and parking lot upgrades.

Other projects carried-out by vendors in FY2016 included upgrades to aerospace facilities, conducting building appraisals and undertaking several facility renovations throughout the property, including a large complex occupied by various Air Force headquarters within the Port campus.
