11/9/2015San Antonio, Texas—During Fiscal Year 2015, which ended Sept. 30, Port San Antonio awarded $6.2 million in contracts to small business, the vast majority of which are based in Bexar County.

This amount reflects 77 procurements through minority-, woman- and veteran-owned business enterprises (SMWVBEs).

The vendors provided an array of important services to the Port, whose 1,900-acre site is home to large  aerospace, manufacturing, logistics and Department of Defense employers. Port customers operate within 10 million square feet of commercial and industrial facilities and employ approximately 12,000 people.

Key projects undertaken by SWMBE vendors during the course of the year included roof repairs, building appraisals, aerospace facility improvements, demolitions, parking lot improvements and HVAC maintenance.

“The small business community is an essential partner in advancing our mission to support our customers’ businesses and help create jobs for our region,” said Port San Antonio President and CEO Roland C. Mower. “With the ongoing growth of our customers, we depend on the expertise of many vendors to support our day-to-day operations and big plans for the future.”

The $6.2 million in services and supplies provided by SWMBE’s represents over 46 percent of total procurements in FY2015—far surpassing the organization’s 35 percent target.
